What are Nasal Polyps?Nasal polyps are non-cancerous, fleshy growths that occur in the nasal passages or deep in the sinuses.
Generally, if you have nasal polyps on one side, you will also get them on the other side.
Sizes vary from minute to large lumps visible from outside, and color may be pinkish, yellowish or greyish.
People suffering from nasal polyps are frequently very uncomfortable and feel as though they are having a cold for much of the time.
People suffering from nasal polyps are also more likely to suffer from allergies.
The exact nasal polyps causes are not known but what is known is that there needs to be an inflammation in the nasal passage for the polyps to occur.
When the nasal passage is inflamed, fluid will accumulate in these cells, and eventually gravity pulls them down, resulting in nasal polyps.
Nasal polyps are characterized as soft, painless, noncancerous growths on the lining of the nasal passages.
They appear after chronic inflammation due to allergies, recurring infection, asthma, drug sensitivity or certain immune disorders.
The Most Common Complications of Nasal Polyps are:
- Asthma Flare-ups
- Blood Clots or Aneurysms
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea
- Sinus Infections
- Spreading of Infection to your Eye Socket
What Causes Nasal Polyps? The exact cause of nasal polyps is unknown, but there needs to be something which causes an inflammation in the nasal passages for polyp growth to occur.
Asthma and other allergies can be one such factor, as other conditions such as cystic fibrosis which irritate body linings.
An unbalanced diet, high in pro-inflammatory foods can also cause inflammation and subsequently nasal polyps to grow.
If you eat too much saturated fat and omega-6 fatty acids, and too little anti-oxidant rich foods and omega-3s, you are at a high risk of developing nasal polyps.
Injuries to the nose, especially ones which alter its shape in any way, are also a risk factor.
Similarly, if you were born with a deviated septum, you are more likely to get nasal polyps.
Living in polluted areas, and staying too long in stuffy rooms can also irritate the nasal passages and cause polyps in the long term.
If the air in your home is too dry, get a humidifier as dry air can inflame the nasal passages and cause nasal polyps to grow.
Nasal Polyps Symptoms
Many people with small nasal polyps may never realise they have them, because the symptoms of nasal polyps are very similar to those you get with a common cold or flu.
However, these symptoms will never get better.
So if you have a persistent stuffy or blocked nose, you may well have nasal polyps.
Eventually, the polyps will grow in size, and cause pain and discomfort.
They can be visible to others, causing embarrassment.
Large polyps will obstruct breathing, and many will develop ‘mouth breathing’ which then results in snoring, low quality of sleep, and sore throats.
Nasal polyps can also cause chronic headaches, due to improper breathing.
In addition, many nasal polyps sufferers reports a loss of the sense of taste and smell, post-nasal drip (mucus running down the back of the throat), and frequent inflammation and infections of the nasal passage.
Symptoms of Nasal Polyps Include:
- Decreased Sense of Smell and/or Taste
- Facial Pain
- Itchy Eyes
- Nasal Congestion
- Nasal Obstruction
- Profuse Nasal Drainage
- Recurrent Sinus Infections
You May have Nasal Polyps if you:
- Don’t Smell as Well as you Used to
- Don’t Taste as Well as you Used to
- Find it Hard to Sleep and Wake up Feeling Tired
- Get Frequent Nose Bleeds
- Have Shortness of Breath
- Notice your Nose is Continually Stuffy or Clogged
- Snore a lot
- Yawn a lot as your Body tries to Compensate for Lack of Oxygen
Nasal Polyps TreatmentYou should not leave nasal polyps untreated, as they will keep getting larger and more of them will form, exacerbating your symptoms.
In addition, large polyps can be extremely painful and alter the shape of your face.
If you have nasal polyps, or your doctor suspects that you have nasal polyps, he or she may recommend an endoscopic examination.
The endoscopic examination is a simple and painless procedure your doctor is able to perform in the clinic.
During the examination your doctor uses a tiny tube with a camera at the end to look up into your nose and sinuses.
Computer tomography (CT) scans may help to identify the precise location of nasal polyps.
Your doctor will generally tell you that you have two treatment options: steroid therapy or surgery.
Steroid therapy involves the application of steroids to the nasal polyps via injections, nasal spray or nasal drops.
Steroid tablets may be given in combination with the spray to treat nasal polyps that are larger in size.
Steroids can usually shrink nasal polyps growths after about a week, but the problem with this treatment is that once it is stopped, nasal polyps re-growth quickly occurs.
Often, the polyps will grow larger than their original sizes.
In addition, steroid therapy is associated with a number of side effects, including weight gain, headaches, nosebleeds, sore throats, increased risk of cataracts and diabetes, and may cause vision problems.
In children, steroids can stunt growth. You should NOT start steroid therapy to remove nasal polyps before trying a better approach.
Note: Although nasal polyps in children are rare, they are not to be taken lightly. Any child with nasal polyps should be screened for cystic fibrosis, Kartagener’s syndrome, and allergic fungal sinusitis.
Other than being treated with steroids or topical, treatment of Nasal polyps can also be done with surgical methods but it is not the best approach.
As your doctor will explain, 75% of the patients will experience polyps re-growth after surgery so it is not a permanent option.
Even when some nasal bone is removed, polyps re-growth is likely to occur after surgery.
In addition, surgery carries many risks, such as the risk of damaging the optic nerve and a risk of causing scar tissue to grow. Not to mention that nasal polyps surgery costs anywhere between $4,000 to $15,000.
Natural Nasal Polyps TreatmentUnknown to many sufferers, nasal polyps removal is possible by using natural herbs and extracts, combined with a natural nasal cleansing method and breathing exercises.
The extracts can be applied directly (for polyps at the entrance of the nose), or heated and inhaled for polyps deeper in the sinuses.
By combining this with cleansing and breathing exercises, you can get rid of the polyps in as little as four days, just by dedicating 15 minutes a day.
In addition, these natural treatments are completely safe and free of side effects.
Permanent Nasal Polyps TreatmentThe key to getting rid of nasal polyps forever is to combine this natural treatment with a dietary and lifestyle change.
This will be aimed at keeping your body in an anti-inflammatory state.
If you keep your body (and therefore, you nasal passages) free of inflammation, it will be impossible for nasal polyps to grow.
This will involve omitting or limiting certain foods, including others, and taking a regular supplement or two, depending what your diet is lacking in.
This is guaranteed to give you effective and permanent nasal polyps removal.
